Hi, I am just wondering what people are doing in their Dunedin gardens now. What are you planting and are you planting seeds or seedlings? I am unsure what will grow to maturity for autumn and what will hibernate over the winter for a head start next spring. Year round gardening is a new concept for me so any info at all will be very gratefully received. :)
for the record - we have a garden chocka full of spuds, broccoli, caulis, cabbages, corn, beetroots, cougettes, pumpkins, parsnips, carrots - all on schedule I think.. have started harvesting the potatoes, heaps of broccoli - eaten some and some gone into the freezer as part of my preparation for my first attempt at feeding the family over winter from home instead of from the supermarket. Small steps but progress is being made! I hve a wee lettuce house providing all our salads and as we do not have a glasshouse the tomatoes are just dotted around everywhere in the hope that one will catch enough sun to provide some fruit. huge tunnel house coming next year! YAY!!
Hope someone out there hears me.
:)

autumn/winter crops
hey there Rachael,
At the moment I'm getting my garden prepared for a productive autumn, winter and spring. Now is the time to sow the seed for many crops you'll be eating in up to 6 months time. This includs brassicas, carrots, beetroot, late spuds, herbs (coriander, parsley, etc), peas, leeks, silverbeet, rocket and spinach. Closer to autumn time you can look at sowing onion seeds in trays for planting out in spring, and direct sowing broad beans for a spring cropping.
Good luck!! Thanks for the post, feel free to keep us updated on your progress! Its surprising how productive a Dunedin vege patch can be over the winter time. You can be harvesting massive caulis with snow on them in July! Yummo
autumn / winter crops
Hi, Bart.
Thankyou for the reply.
There are a few gaps appearing in the garden as we harvest all those brassicas and potatoes etc. Absolutely no luck with the parsnips... as usual... but the carrots are looking great, beetroot coming along nicely. My corn is looking a little stunted but is trying hard to thrive in a new raides bed we made... not the best soil but it is a start!
Sometimes it's just having someone to motivate me to keep going! It is so easy to enjoy the current harvest and forget to prepare for the Dunedin winter! To be honest I did not even think you could produce anything over winter.
May I ask how you store your produce? like potatoes?
I will have to figure out how to put pictures up and show you our wee patch. :)
